Author’s Preface

This collection of essays, written over the course of different years, comes to light in a turbulent time. Yet, in truth, our history has rarely known calm times. It is no wonder that we continually hope for a better future, since neither the past nor the present offers much comfort.
It is in order to make that brighter tomorrow possible that this book was written, devoted entirely to a single theme: the relationship between the human being and the Creator.

The author sincerely believes that everything else depends upon the quality of such a relationship—the direction and meaning of our efforts, the motivation for our work, the nature of our relationships within the family and society, the upbringing of children, and, ultimately, the level of our humanity.
Yet a necessary condition for the soundness of our decisions and efforts is clarity of mind and an understanding of the meaning of the words we speak.

It is by no means trivial to understand the meaning of such words as “God,” “faith,” “good,” and “commandments.” Most of the believers I have encountered along my life’s path had only a vague understanding of the words they uttered (to say nothing of those who considered themselves nonbelievers), and the reason for this was the vagueness and obscurity of the concepts behind them.
To the best of my ability and understanding, I have tried to help clarify these and similar matters for the reader. And even if I do not succeed in convincing anyone of my view, I will already be glad if these themes become a subject for reflection.
